Raising Kids the Green Way

Everyone knows that there isn't a truly right way or wrong way to raise a child. However, there is a GREEN WAY. Here are some steps that you can take to start raising an eco-child.

Organic Whenever Possible

Children don't think about what is going into their body we need to do that for them. It isn't always easy to find or afford a completely organic lifestyle so a good place to start is with some of the most harmful non-organic products. Try to get organic milk, potatos, and baby food. These are some of the most harmful products if purchased non-organic.

Organic baby food can get expensive in some places especially areas with small demand for organic foods. Try buying organic fruits and vegetables and blending them up to save some cash. A bag of organic green beans may cost a little more but it can fill quite a few baby food bottles. In fact, more than likely it will turn out cheaper than buying regular non-organic baby food in a jar.

The 3 R's

Teaching a child to reduce, reuse, and recycle from an early age builds good habits. As many kids grow and learn they become opinionated little "know it alls" in at least one phase of their life. Why not harness that power to be outspoken and give them a cause worth stiring a fuss over. More than once you will find that they will keep you in line and in good habits, too. Just try to throw away a newspaper in the trash with the junior green enforcers on patrol.

Be Green at Gift Time

Tons of paper is wasted each year on gift wrap. Birthdays, Christmas, Hanukkah, and Granduations don't need to be so wasteful. Consider purchasing gift bags that can be reused over and over again. Some gifts are just to big for that. Consider using newspaper of other recycled materals for times like those. They are not as pretty but gifts of that size are not usually left out for display during the holiday season anyway.
